Note: to install RemoteSpark by sideloading, you will first need to have received an app package from our Operations team.

Sideload on HoloLens - general

IMPORTANT: to side load an application, the HoloLens must be in Developer Mode and the Device Portal must be turned on. The Device Portal is a web server on your HoloLens that you can connect to via USB or WiFi on your PC.  If you haven’t yet set up the HoloLens Device Portal, see here for instructions.

Sideload on HoloLens using Windows Device Portal (USB)

  1. Extract (unzip) the RemoteSpark app package.
  2. Connect the HoloLens to your PC with a micro-USB cable.
  3. From a web browser on your PC, go to https://127.0.0.1:10080/
    • You should an error message “This site is not secure”, click Details (or Advanced on other browsers) and go on to the website.

  4. Log in when prompted.
  5. Click Apps under Views on the side navigation bar.
  6. Click Browse/Choose File under Select application package.
    • Select RemoteSpark (APPXBUNDLE File).
  7. Select the checkbox for Allow me to select framework packages.

  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Browse/Choose File under Choose any necessary dependencies.
  10. From the Dependencies folder of the RemoteSpark file, select an arm dependency.Click Open.
    • Repeat this step for each dependency as you can only select one at a time.Dependencies 1Select arm
    • Note: for HoloLens 1 devices, you will need to select the x86 dependencies instead of arm.
  11. Click Install.

Sideload on HoloLens using Windows Device Portal (WiFi)

Note: the HoloLens and PC will need to be on the same WiFi network.

  1. Extract (unzip) the RemoteSpark app package.
  2. On your HoloLens, locate the device’s IPV4 address from the Settings application under Network and Internet/WiFi/Hardware Properties.
    • If there are many WiFi networks in range of your device, you may have to scroll down to the bottom of the list to find Hardware Properties.

  3. On a PC that’s connected to the same WiFi network as the HoloLens, type the IP address of the HoloLens in your web Browser to bring up the Windows Device Portal.

  4. Log in when prompted.
  5. Click Apps under Views on the navigation bar along the left side of the home page of the Device Portal interface.

Sideload on PC - general

These are the steps for sideloading RemoteSpark on a Windows 10 PC/tablet.

Note: ensure your device has sideloading enabled.

On un-managed devices, this can be done by going to Settings Update & Security > For Developers. 

Under Use Developer Features, select Sideload Apps or Deverloper Mode.

On managed devices, this can be done by deploying an Enterprise Policy.

Sideload on PC using PowerShell

  1. Extract (unzip) the RemoteSpark app package.
  2. Right click on the PowerShell Script.
  3. Click Run with PowerShell.Run powershell
  4. When the PowerShell window opens, follow prompts to run the installer.Install PowerShell

                    Tip: to install using Windows App Installer,  check to make sure it’s installed on your machine.

                    Import the Security Certificate

                      1. Double click the certificate (.cer file) to launch the Certificate Import Wizard.

                      2. Install the certificate in Local Machine – click Next.

                          A user Account Control window prompt will appear on-screen: “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your computer?”

                        1. Click Yes. 

                          A 2nd Certificate Import Wizard window will appear on-screen.

                        2. Select Place all certificates in the following store – click Browse

                          Do not select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate.
                        4. A Select Certificate Store window will appear on-screen.
                        5. Select Trusted People – click OK.

                          Install Dependencies

                          Return to the File Explorer window with RemoteSpark.

                            1. Click the Dependencies folder.

                            2. Click (x86).

                            3. Click on each dependency to install.
                            4. Click Open.
                            5. Click Install.

                          Install RemoteSpark app package

                          Return to File Explorer window with all RemoteSpark files

                          1. Double click the RemoteSpark .appx file.

                          2. Click Open.
